geoSpecific - The PD/Shareware CD is now ready.
Bruce Thomas writes:
This CD has all of the GEOS PD/Shareware software that I have collected over the past 14.5 years on it. At present it is over 38 MBs in size with D64 (mostly) and D81 images of the disks. I have included the GeoWorld magazine disks, the GeoManiacs Collection (compiled by Gaelyne Gasson), the GeoMetrix library, the GeoVision International PD disks, plus software from Bo Zimmerman, George Wells, Mystic Jim, Nate Fielder, Paul Murdaugh and many others.

Also included are my columns and articles from publications such as The UnderGround, GEOS Publication, Commodore World, LoadStar Letter, GO64! and others. Along with the articles are accompanying screenshots and some articles also have programs, files and demos to go along with them. All together there are over 45 articles on a wide variety of GEOS topics.

Information regarding the CD is available on the CUE website:

follow the geoSpecific CD link) and will let you see what the CD contains along with getting a preview of the navigation system of the CD (the files online are a subset of the Index System on the CD).

Thanks a lot and enGEOy!

New version of PuZip (1.12)
Pasi writes:
New things include automatic .d64/d71/d81 suffix addition to zip filename for disk images, lazy matching improves the compression ratio (you can select speedier compression by sacrificing compression efficiency), and the c128 version now uses the other 64kB also (now has the same history buffer size as the C64 version).

geoCanvas under Wheels now available
Bruce Thomas writes:
If you've been reading the GTM list messages lately you know that Todd Elliott as successfully patched GeoCanvas to run under Wheels 128 in 80 column mode.
Todd has also patched the 40 column version of GeoCanvas to run under Wheels 128 in 40 column mode.
Note:
The 40 colmumn version of GeoCanvas still has problems under Wheels 64 but that is due to a bug in Wheels and Maurice is working on correcting this bug (which affects more than just GeoCanvas).

Anyhow, I have placed versions of GeoCanvas, along with patched versions for Wheels use, on the Download page on the CUE web site at

The files are available in D64 format so you will need GeoConvert98F or GeoBEAP to extract the images onto 1541 disks. Links to both of these files can be found on the GeoCanvas page.

IDE64 Geos support!!
Maciej Witkowiak writes:
Recently I completed two parts of GEOS support for IDE64. The more important one is that I ported my GEOS driver for my very own IDE interface to use IDE64 and I wrote a small utility to read time and date from IDE64 RTC and put them into GEOS system.

For more info check out this link:

Links fixed, IDE64 ordered :)
I have fixed and removed some broken links throughout the site, most importantly was Maurice Randalls, also I have just ordered an IDE64 and am very keen to get my hands on this device, especially for use with JOS/WiNGS :)

64NET v1.xx is free software
As of  today 64NET v1 is free software. You can download a keyfile and 64net from:

MegaPatch fully supports 64Net and it is something I have just started using (with the help of Werner Weicht).
With Megapatch3 and my PC its a nice way to swap files between my Commodore and the PC, and in MegaPatch I can access my 64Net drive (a 41,71,81 disk image on my PC HardDrive) and unzip files from the PC to my Ramlink using GeoZIP_MP3 which is way cool and Fast! :-) No more disk swapping..

Ethernet on the Commodore 64?
This was taken from the cbm-hackers mailing list:

The possibility of connecting the Commodore64 to an Ethernet local area network has been a collective dream in the Commodore community for decades. A C64 Ethernet adapter would make it possible to connect the C64 directly to the Internet, making it possible to download software, transfer data to and from the C64, play network games over the Internet..
With TFE cartridge (The Final Ethernet cartridge) this is now possible.
Sound interesting?well check the link below for more info/Pictures:

GeoZIP.8 for Wheels and MegaPatch3 are now ready and available for downloading. These releases include minor Bug fixes and an improved Menu.

Note..
Also in the MegaPatch3 version we have the ability to unzip files from a PCDOS disk to a CBMdrive using MP3's built in read only PCDOS Driver, this is a feature of MegaPatch and not GeoZIP..

Downolad them from:

[Pasi's_Site]  GeoZIP_Wheels.

[Werner's_Site]  GeoZIP_MegaPatch3.

Thanks must got to Todd Elliott and Werner Weicht for converting this great application to Geos..

More on the SuperCPU Coca Cola Santa Claus Demo
Todd Eliott writes:
I have created a website for the Coca Cola Santa Claus demo on geocities. Screenshots, courtesy of Ray Allen, are on the website so that people who do not have the necessary hardware or software can just take a peek at the pictures and see what the hubbub is all about for the full-screen FLI mode. The site is at:

HD owners (and owners to be)
More news taken from Homestead posted by Maurice Randall, the full text can be found in the Homestead archives..

The print spooler now includes two different methods of output to the printer.
You can connect any standard serial bus printer interface or Commodore-ready printer to the auxiliary port. When configured this way, all print data captured by the HD will spool out through the auxiliary port.

Or you can connect an optional parallel adaptor which I will be producing. The adaptor connects to both the auxiliary port and the SCSI pass-throughport on the back of the HD. Both ports are used for this purpose. The adaptor adds a parallel printer port to the HD. The adaptor also has a SCSI pass-through port so you can still plug in external SCSI devices to your HD.
Any standard parallel printer cable can be connected to the parallel printer port on the adaptor. When configured this way, all print data captured by the HD will spool out through the parallel cable directly to a printer's Centronics port. This will provide much faster output to these types of printers.

One other thing I will be adding to the print spooler are JiffyDOS routines just in case there's ever a printer interface
made that will contain JiffyDOS. (or possibly JiffyDOS roms made available for certain existing interfaces - Yes??)

All the work is finished in the DOS for allowing any size SCSI mechanism to be used. The limit has been slightly reduced from my previous postings, though. We only have the ability to use up to 1,024 gigabytes now instead of 2,048 gigabytes. Shucks... :)

More new stuff...

For those using Zip drives in their CMD-HD, a disk change is now detected by the DOS. Just like with the FD-2000, if you pop out the disk and insert a different one, the partition table from the new disk will be read into memory. Previously, you would have to press the reset button to force the DOS to read the new partition table. In GEOS or Wheels, you can't just press the reset button without causing problems. Actually, any removable media drive used will work as described above..

I've added a new 'extended foreign' partition type. These can be as large as 8 gigs and are fully supported by the DOS for reading and writing blocks. These will have uses for things such as capturing scanner image data, CDburning, big data buffers, and any other fast data storage needs.

As soon as the extended native partition work is finished and  tested, I'll be shipping out the first DOS+release to everyone who has it ordered as well as all HD's that have been shipped since August of last year. It will also be included with all new HD's.

Cost/Price of Upgrade:
For anyone interested in the cost of the HD-DOS+ upgrade, it's $40 plus $4 shipping in the USA. Shipping to Canada is $6. All other countries is $10.

The upgrade includes the original HD Utilities disk plus a new HD-DOS+ Utilities disk, an HD manual addendum, installation instructions, and a new DualBoot rom module with a switch for mounting on the back of the HD. The switch is used to switch your HD back and forth between the older DOS and the newer DOS if you ever need to. Or you can simply tape the switch inside the case and leave it set to the newer DOS. The DualBoot module  has both the CMD V2.80 BootROM and the new DOS+ BootROM in one.
The HD Utilities disk has the latest CMDV1.92 HD-DOS and the utilties that CMD provided. The HD-DOS+ Utilities disk includes the new HD-DOS+ V2.00 along with new utilities for Wheels and non-Wheels users.

HD-DOS update...
Maurice Randall writes:
A CMD-HD functions as a print-spooler for the first time ever.
Today was the first real test of the spooler and I'm very pleased with the initial results. It was pretty cool the first time. I could still access the HD to load or save files even while it was still spooling out the data to the printer that I had sent to it.
The print spooler captures all device 4 accesses and saves the incoming data to a print buffer partition on the hard disk. It starts sending the data almost immediately. It's got special serial bus code for the auxiliary port that will detect if the printer is busy, such as when it's moving the print head and can't accept any data.

When that happens, the spooler will let the rest of the HD-DOS take care of other jobs instead of locking up the system while waiting on the printer. When the printer is finally ready, it will send more data to it.

The print spooler doesn't seem to have slowed down the HD at all. If anything, it's made the computer (and ultimately, the user) more efficient.
